By plane
Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (IATA: UPG) (ICAO: WAAA) is located 30 km from the city of Makassar and has flights to and form all Indonesia cities.
A taxi to the city should cost about Rp 70,000 if arranged directly with the driver. The official airport charge is Rp 100,000 or you can use the bus to the city of Makassar should costs Rp 15,000. In addition, there is a free shuttle bus from the airport (bottom level) to the main road where you can catch a pete-pete into town for Rp 3,000.
By becak
Becak is a trishaw, unique design, very minimalist compared to the ones in Java. Fare depends on the distance, usually Rp 5,000-20,000 around town.

By petepete (Angkot)
A public petepete should cost Rp 3,000. Many begin their routes from Makassar Mall.- Buroncong, Early morning breakfast cake. Baked on firewood. It's made of grated coconut, flour & sugar.
- Coto. Almost everywhere. Traditional South Sulawesi soup, it contains meat, liver and lung.
- Ikan Bakar. Their grilled milkfish served with peanut sauce and coconut milk soup. Paotere is one of the famous seafood restaurant and remarkable.
- Mie Kanton. Around chinatown. Kantonese style fried noodle. It's deep fried or usually grilled noodle, served with condensed soup containing vegetables, fried meatball, and pork meat. Can be found around chinatown (as mentioned above). The famous Mie Kanton restaurants are Kios Lombok on Jl. Lombok, Kios Ateng on Jl. Sangir, Kios Ramayana on Jl. Gunung Lompobattang.
- Mie Kering. Dried noodle served with thick gravy and sliced chicken, shrimp, mushrooms, liver, and squid. It's somewhat similar to Chinese I Fu Mie, only the noodle is thinner. The famous Mie Kering restaurants are Mie Titi on Jl. Timor, Jl. Datumuseng, Jl. Boulevard, Mie Awa on Jl. Bali, Jl. Patimura.
- Nasi Kuning. This food is made from rice cooked with turmeric and coconut milk and spices. It is more tasty than white rice. The famous Nasi Kuning on Jl. Penghibur.
- Nyuk Nyang. Around chinatown. Chinese style pork meatballs. Served in tasty pork, meat or fish. The famous Nyuk Nyang are Kios Ati Raja on Jl. G. Merapi and Nyuk Nyang Babi on Jl. Timor.
- Pallubasa. Makassar style meat soup. The soup is spicy and contains grated coconut. The most famous Pallubasa is located on Jl. Serigala, known as Pallubasa Serigala.
- Pangsit Mie. Around Chinatown. Pangsit Mie is noodle served with BBQ pork, chicken and wontons. Easy to be found around the chinatown (Jl. Sulawesi, Jl Lombok, Jl. Sangir and surrounding area). They usually available only until lunch time. The famous one is Pangsit Mie Kenangan on Jl. Lombok, Pangsit Mie Toraja on Jl. Sulawesi and Pansit Mie Madya on Jl. Buru
- Pisang epe. Pressed grilled banana, served with melted brown sugar. Available with chocolate and/or cheese topping, and durian (seasonal) flavor.
- Songkolo. Stirred glutinous rice, served with fried grated coconut, salted fish and sambal (traditional chili sauce). It's quite difficult to find songkolo around Makassar nowadays. It's usually available at the traditional market or traditional food seller. Try Bacan Market (Pasar Bacan) in the morning if you want to have songkolo.
- Sop Konro Karebosi: They serve Sop Konro (beef ribs in traditional dark soup) and Konro Bakar (grilled beef ribs, served with tasty peanut sauce).
- Sop Saudara. Traditional South Sulawesi soup, it contains meat, liver, lung. However, you may choose the ingredients you want in your soup.
- Sop Ubi. Traditional South Sulawesi soup, it contains meat, vermicelli noodles and sweet potato. Go to Datumuseng Street in the morning if you want to have sop ubi.
- Losari Beach (Pantai Losari) is the name of long stretch of waterfront in the middle of the city. A very nice sunset view.
- Fort Rotterdam is an old fortress from Dutch colonial days. A small donation is expected of around Rp 10,000, and they will insist you sign a guestbook. Note if you are a foreigner, you will be the biggest tourist attraction there, and expect to spend at least half your time taking pictures with curious local residents and kids from small town Sulawesi on field trips. The friendly attitude makes this experience quite fun, and you can learn a lot about Sulawesi as well from it.
- Gereja Katedral Makassar. Cathedral Church of Makasar whose formal name is the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the oldest church building in the city of Makassar and throughout the South and Southeast Sulawesi.
- De Protestante Kerk (Protestant Church Immanuel) was built in 1885 by the Dutch colonial government. Classic gothic-style architecture. The church was built to meet the need for places of worship for Protestant Christians outside the castle.
- Makam (Cemetery of) Sultan Hasanuddin. Sultan Hasanuddin is the King of Gowa-16 and the Indonesian national hero who was born with the name I Mallombasi Muhammad Bakir Daeng Mattawang Karaeng Bonto Mangepe. He was born on January 12, 1631 in Makassar, South Sulawesi, died on June 12, 1670 in Makassar, South Sulawesi.
- Mesjid Tua Katangka as built in 1603 after the King of Gowa 14 Sultan Alauddin became a Muslim. Sultan Alauddin as well as some of the king his successor to give freedom to Catholics to establish the Church in 1633. The main ingredient is the Mosque building materials katangka tree.
- Pelabuhan Paotere. Harbor within ± 5 km (± 30 minutes) from the center of Makassar is one of the people harbor heritage survives and is evidence of the kingdom of Gowa-Tallo since the 14th century. Paotere harbor is still used today as harbor boats and people like Phinisi Lambo and also a center of commercial fishing, which can be seen lined up along the road in the port of stores that sell various kinds of dried fish, fishing gear and a few seafood restaurants
- Pulau Kodingareng Keke is a beautiful white sandy island with good diving.
- Pulau Laccukang is a beautiful white sandy island with good diving.
- Pulau Samalona is a beautiful white sandy island with good diving. Trip from Makassar takes 30-45 minutes, and costs Rp600,000-800,000 (1 boat can carry 2-8 people).
